• British VS American: How far are they different?

    Focus: British VS American

    Material: grammar past tense VX present perfect tense, a set of copies, video of a part of

    Love Actually scene and American slang

    Procedure: Teacher elicits the difference accent between American and British. During presentation, Teacher presents present perfect tense and past tense (page 30). Then, distribute the copy of the following activity

    Change the expressions below either in American or British English (present perfect to past tense or vice versa)

    1. Have you made up your mind>?

    2. I didn’t make any decision

    3. Have you got your dinner?

    4. Did you listen to the newest track by Michael Buble’?

    5. They haven’t read the latest news about the launching of Dell product

    6. Did you sell your old cellphone?

    7. Have you watched the latest movie by Tom Hanks?

    8. She has met him.

    9. Did you study Algebra?

    10. He has not taken a nap.

    11. He has got an idea how to do it.

    12. We decided to take it anyway.



    If the time allows, Teacher can show Love Actually the movie. The scene was Collin Frisel was going to America to find American girls. The scene shows how American girls were amazed with the British man who was dying to find a girlfriend.

    Later, Teacher distributes the copy of list of different terms used in British and American language.

    As soon as the students finish filling the grid, the teacher shows another video showing, that is American slang. Note down the meaning of each word because later the students have to use one of the slang in their dialog.






    After showing the movie, put the students into pairs, ask them to pretend to be British and American. Put them into situations that is possible for two different people to meet. Use the words on the list, slang in the video, different tenses, and if possible use the accent, too.
